Sony World Photography Awards 2011 - Student Shortlist


The shortlist for the 2011 Sony World Photography Awards Student Focus competition has been revealed.
One of the world's most high-profile student photography competitions, it is open to universities worldwide that hold a photography programme. Over 200 institutions across 6 continents have submitted photographs this year, growing from just 10 universities when the competition started in 2007.
Created in partnership with the Young Tate Online, this year's student competition was briefed based on the photographic exhibition EXPOSED at Tate Modern, London and students were asked to submit images drawn on themes explored within the exhibition.
10 photographers, one from each of the shortlisted institutions have now been chosen to compete in the final competition with the winner being announced at an awards ceremony in London on 27 April 2011. All shortlisted photographers will take part in the World Photography Festival at Somerset House, London and their images will be exhibited as part of the World Photography Festival London.

A prestigious judging panel including notable figures from the photographic community selected the shortlist, while the brief for the next stafe of the competition is 'Actions speak louder than words'. The 10 shortlisted photographers will be asked to produce a series of images on the subject of actions and movement using Sony Alpha cameras.
The winning photographer will be awarded around €45,000 worth of Sony digital imaging equipment.
